The facts
The comparison mixes different categories of employment. The lower contemporary figure largely refers to regular CPSE employees, while contractual, casual and daily-rate workers form another substantial part of the workforce. The genuine issue is increasing contractualisation, not simply “half of all PSU jobs disappeared.”
The Modi government has strengthened India’s public sector undertakings (PSUs) since 2014. The SBI saw its market cap reach Rs 10+ lakh crore now, from Rs 1.51 lakh crore in FY16.102103
The number of profit-making CPSEs has increased from 157 in FY15 to 227 in FY25, while the number of loss-making CPSEs declined from 77 to 63 during the same period.104
And the real headline is the balance sheet: the net worth of all CPSEs has more than doubled, it swelled from Rs 9.85 lakh crore in FY15 to Rs 22.33 lakh crore as on March 31, 2025.
Public Sector Banks have undergone a remarkable turnaround under the Modi Government: from a combined net profit of just ₹36,270 crore in 2014 to an all-time high of ₹1.98 lakh crore in FY2025-26, this isn't a one-year blip. It is the fourth consecutive year in which PSBs have remained profitable.105106
