The facts
This is the larger problem with Rahul Gandhi’s narrative. Time and again, he appears to present selective, outdated, or narrowly defined figures as if they represent the complete reality, while leaving out the latest data and the context behind those numbers.
Here, the 8.3% figure comes from NFHS-5 (2019–21) and specifically refers to women aged 15–49 who owned land alone. It does not represent all property ownership.147148
He deliberately used this data. Moreover, the latest NFHS-6 (2023–24) provides a broader and more recent indicator. It shows that 18.8% of Indian households have at least one usual female member who owns a house and/or land, either alone or jointly. This has increased from 14.0% in NFHS-5.149
96% of houses under PMAY-U 2.0 are allotted to women under the Modi government.151
That means under PM Modi, women are increasingly being made direct owners or co-owners of housing assets, strengthening their economic security and property ownership.
